Today we went to class, as always! and we learned about the preterito (una forma en the past tense). We already have learned all of this but it's just kinda what you do is go over the same things but with more detail each time. My teacher is phenomenal!
I am very feliz porque yesterday and today I got to Skype with Corey! Technology is amazing! I miss him MUCHO! But it is really cool sharing our experiencias and it's really such a short amount of time apart.
After school we went (Michelle, Alissa, Ashley y yo) to a little como bridal boutique where they sell all sorts of stuff for weddings and special occasions and I found some shoes that I LOVE! But they were kind of expensive...do idk if I will buy them or not...I need to look more. Wedding shoes are expensive for some reason it seems.
After that we came home and had lunch and I learned how to make this yummy dressing that Marcela makes for our salads. I think we usually have salad about everyday for lunch. I love it! We also had this really yummy carrot soup and chicken and we had gelatin con manzanas as dessert.
Later we went to FHE. We had a spiritual thought and then we went to the university to play futbol on a field we scheduled. Oh we also had a cake for refreshments because we have had some birthdays lately here! We had such a fun time! Some other people who came to the field to play ended up playing with us too. They were REALLY good. We were not good....but we had fun. I was goalie for a little while!!
When we came home I got to skype with my mom for a few minutes and Gago y Gerardo met my mom and dad! That was cool and I think they all really liked that! I had to go because we were eating cena (quesadillas con...like una salsa).
After cena Michelle and I did our homework and I got to talk to Corey! We still have many things to do for our wedding! Like our invitation decisions and stuff like that!
Anyways..it is very late...tomorrow we start doing service! I am excited!
Buenas Noches!!

A few things I forgot!
The other thing I haven't been doing very well is recording my feelings about the experience I'm having. One of the things Corey advised me to do was to write more than just what I do and see but also how I feel about it. So here we go...I'm going to try ha
I guess what I have really learned the most since I got here, is how the same it is here as in the states. It's very hard to explain my feelings about the city, the culture, and the people. Corey always told me to really understand I would have to experience it and he was so right. Before coming here all I heard was how beautiful Guadalajara is and how wonderful it is but at first glance the truth is when you walk around the streets are not as clean, the sidewalks aren't as straight, there's a lot of graffiti, and some places really, really stink. The drivers are crazy and will run you over if you cross the street when they're coming, the new bacteria for our bodies can and probably will make you sick (as 5 girls have experienced so far), the buses are like a roller coaster without a lap bar, and men of all ages hoot, whistle, holler, and pull over to offer you a ride. There are differences and things that you could argue are better of worse or whatever.
Once you get past that first glance though, like I am, something incredible happens in your mind and in your heart. I have begun to understand in a kind of internal way the people and as I have immersed myself in this life it has been amazing how my eyes and my heart have been opened and I truly feel that this is one of the most beautiful places on earth. There's something about the heart of the people here. Their warmer, their protective, their HUGE family people, they love comida, they LOVE to help you and they are truly some of the hardest working, talented, and most effective people in the world.
Before I arrived I had imagined my circumstances being so different. i really was expecting to like live in a village with a dirt floor or something. of course there are people that abide in those humble circumstances, I have seen them, but it has been good for me to see the real mexico. Not the one cast on CNN or just the government we here about. I am seeing how a mom and dad interact, how they love each other and their children and revolved their whole lives around them. The schedule they keep, although hard for me to adjust to, is incredible with regards to what it does for the family. The mom and dad and kids are all together for every meal, and the dad comes home shortly after they come home from school (which if you didn't know is the crucial time of the day for children with their parents). They play together, laugh together, discipline together, it's awesome!
Another thing that I feel has been good for me is to experience being the foreigner. It is a new thing for me to stand at a bus stop with 12 mexican women staring at you intently. It's a new thing for me to get whistled at and yelled to by strangers and to simply ignore them even if they're right next to you. There are a lot of weird things that happen to you when you are an extranjera. It sucks getting no deals on stuff and getting ripped off in taxis and stuff because I'm a white girl from the US. It truly has given me perspective on how I would want to be looked at and treated and dealt with as a foreigner that will impact me in my future interactions.
I think it's just important to realize that there is more than one right way of doing something. There are amazing people everywhere and we would do well to learn from all of them the best we can. Surely if we can do that we could create something amazing with all the best parts of cultures and people.
Aventuras Nuevas- June 25-26
Oye! So much happens everyday it's so hard to stay caught up and to try to write all the things I want to! Yesterday was a pretty relaxing afternoon. Michelle and I spent time some time with the kids in the afternoon. Gerardo is so stinkin cute! Yesterday he decided he wanted to show us all his things of hair gel. We hear this little knock on our door and I open it up and it's his cute little big brown-eyed self with 3 jars of hair gel. He just comes in and asks us "Quieres ver mi gel (pronounced hell)." How could you turn down an opportunity to see this little boys hell! Ha ha He preceded to ask us to smell all of them and told us that his mom uses it to make him guapo ha ha. He teaches us all sorts of great vocabulary! He left for a little bit and then came back with his hair all slicked back so we could see how handsome he was. Then he started telling us about his girlfriend ha ha and how pretty she is. Cuteness!
I think the family is starting to figure out our boundaries, or lack of boundaries I should say. The kids like to come in and play in our room and talk to us and Michelle and I LOVE it but I think the parents and Miriam have not really known how much space we want or something, but I think they are started to get to know us and seeing that we just adore the family.
Last night we went to a stake dance! That was pretty exciting. It was a semiformal dance and we met our group and the Single Adults in our ward at the chapel we go to church at and then carpooled to the church where the dance was being held. Let me tell ya, Mexicans are partiers! And late partiers at that! It was funny how the dance was similar to the ones in the states and how it was way different also. It's the same in that everyone is super awkward at the beginning and dancing in weird circle things. Also they play a TON of techno…oye! But it was way different in all the different types of dancing there was…there was like hip hop music, salsa, banda, and like swing. It was fun, and a little nerve wrecking to dance with the natives ha. But they were kind and good teachers…well some of them were. One thing that is way different is that in the states if you get asked to dance you dance for one song and then you're done. Well here, you get asked to dance and it's until you tell them you don't want to dance anymore ha.
I danced with a few different people. Martín, Fernando, some other guy, and Brad from my group. I learned how to do all sorts of spins and steps and dips. It was fun! It went really late though! The dance was supposed to end at 1 but we didn't get home until like 2:30 and didn't get to bed til about 3:30. That wasn't super smart since we had to be at the university this morning at 7:45! Needless to say I am going to bed VERY soon!
What was SO SO awesome last night was that I met one of Corey's converts!!! A girl name Flor, she came up to me at the end of the night and asked me if my name is Cheyenne. I thought I must have met her earlier and just forgot but then she preceded to tell me that she new my novio and that he had served in that building in her stake and converted her family! Apparently she recognized me from Core's facebook and finally realized where she recognized me from. She is now preparing to go on a mission! She leaves August 11th for Monterey Mexico!! It made me just SO SO ecstatic! She told me that Corey worked a lot with her dad when he was here. I asked her about her dad and she told me that he passed away a couple of years ago but that they had always remembered Elder Carroll. She asked me about our marriage plans and it was just so cool to see the fruits of Corey's service. What are the odds!? It made my whole trip!!
Today we went to visit some other cities and it was so so cool. First we went to Sayula. This city was seriously one of the coolest places I have ever seen in my life! It just was so gorgeous and it was really quite clean and it just had the coolest architecture and sights. The mountains are there and there is farming and it just was cool! We went to a world famous knife factory there where they make SWEET knives and silverware and stuff out of steel. It's a family business that has been going for 10 generations! It was absolutely amazing the craftsmanship they achieve and uniformity with their hands! It was unbelievable! The owner guy (the generation) he was this cute old man and he gave us a tour of the whole process and took us all through the factory. Not to worry! I took pictures of EVERYTHING. The make like kitchen, pocket, fishing, machete, big, little, medium- all sorts of knives! The handles are made out of the antlers of different animals which is freaking sweet! Or also ivory. A lot of them had sweet engravings on them too. After we went there we went to this amazing cathedral near by and then to a place where they sell caramel. We thought where we were going was where they make the caramel but it turned out that where we went was a family's home where they are vendors of the product. While the woman was trying to show us the caramel and let us try it there was this baby across the little garden in the middle of their home just crying and I asked her if it was her baby girl. She told me it was and I asked her if I could go see her and she told me yes! She was SOO cute! Oh my goodness! I went over to her stroller and she immediately stopped crying when she saw me and starting waving! Lol aww…and I just got to play with her with Michelle for a few minutes. It made my day!
After our fun in Sayula we got back on the bus and went to Tapalpa. The scenery was AWESOME on our way to Tapalpa but it was up these hills and turns and a lot of us got car sick and really weren't feeling so hot. We finally got there and I think we just kinda went there to eat at this restaurant there. The restaurant had kind of a western feel and it was kinda weird but cool because it was literally in the middle of the like cow farms but it was a pretty nice place. We had different kinds of tacos, I had lamb and chips (tostadas) and salsa and rice and beans. While we were there the EAU and GHN game was playing…dang it US we almost had it!! When we were finishing eating a Mariachi band came and they played two songs for us! It was WAY cool! Then they took a picture with us!
It was funny cause after that Michelle and I asked one of the waiters if he would take a picture of us for us and after he took a picture of us he asked us if we would do him a favor. I was confused because I was pretty sure that he said favor (you have to think of all the conversations I recount as being in Spanish) and then he preceded to ask us if he could take a picture with us ha ha. It's weird cause this has happened a few times to Michelle and me. Then he couldn't find a camera so he asked us to wait while his friend went to get a camera ha ha. He then asked me if my novio was here or somewhere else. I told him he is in Utah and he goes oh okay then I'm okay. I guess white girls are hard to come by here ha.
After eating we went to Pueblo which is super close. Like right after we got there and they told us to go do stuff for an hour it started POURING! But we found shelter in the little stores and looked around and stuff for awhile. It was a really cool city with a lot of charm because it is a farming city and it's in the mountains so it has resisted a lot of urbanization while being a very active and industrious town. They are very strict on maintaining the integrity of their heritage and of the origins of the city. It was really quite beautiful.
Finally it stopped raining and we made our way back to the bus…exhausted! Now I'm thinking it is time for bed!! Church tomorrow is at 11 so we can sleep in!! I'm very excited about that!
When I got home today I decided to figure out if I could text Corey with my email so I could talk to him because I haven't talked to him in a week! Ah! And guess what!? It worked! So I got to talk to him a little bit today and I'm SO happy! Technology is pretty incredible! If you don't know how to do it go to Tinkernut.com and look at April 2008 and it's in that month. It has tons of cool tech how-to's on there!
Anyways, time for bed for me! Hasta manana!

Una familia maravillosa- June 24, 2010
Thursday started out early for Michelle and I as we decided to start running! We didn't run too long but it felt so good to do some actual exercise! We found that there really are Mexicans that go running! BUT we still seemed to draw a lot of attention…no matter what we do. But there is this nice median in front of the gate in between the streets and they call it a park…it's not really what I would call a park but it works. It has a sidewalk that runs for a long ways down the road and it's like a nice boulevard with trees and marble work and stuff. We are determined to stay in shape…or at least not get fat while we are here! Ha our mama told us that one of her girls last year gained 10 KILOS!! While she was here. We eat pretty well in our house and she said we don't eat nearly as much as the girls last year did (which means they must have eaten a TON) so we're hoping we'll be fine :-)
After school yesterday we went to Costco and Walmart (It's probably like a 10 minuteish bus ride). We needed to buy some notebooks and snacks and Michelle and I wanted to by whitening strips BUT apparently they don't have those here. I asked a couple workers and they knew what I was talking about but I think maybe they're like an American thing.? I guess we really like our teeth. I don't know.
When we got home from the store we rested for a little bit and then went outside with Marcela and the kids for awhile. In the afternoon it started raining way hard. The rain is interesting because, at least most of the time, you can see lightening for a long time before it starts raining. The storm was SO loud and strong yesterday and I think the power went out 2 or three times. We just hung out with Daniela and Gerardo and watched a movie, in Spanish of course, and I tried to pick a template for my wedding website ha. We also looked at pictures of the family with Daniela and showed them pictures of our families.
We also learned how to make Flan! Marcela taught us and it was WAY cool how she did and WAY easy…we haven't eaten it yet..we will eat it Friday but everything in it lends to a successful dessert so we will see! It was really funny because we were not paying attention to the time and she called us in a slight panic and asked us what time we were supposed to turn it off (because we were supposed to remember) and I had forgotten and Michelle knew and realized it was past the time and she was teasing us saying "No son chefs!" ha she's such a sweet woman!
We feel way blessed to have been assigned to live with this family. They teach us SO much and are so fun for us to be with that I hardly even want to go out and do other things! The kids are just so fun and she helps us to understand new words and we probably speak more spanish in the house than we do anywhere else! I love it!!
Toy Story 3-June 23, 2010
Wednesday was another exciting day. We went to school in the morning which usually goes by SUPER fast. Our maestra, Paola (I think that's how she spells it), is fabulosa! Seriously the best Spanish teacher ever! And I learn a lot from her.
After school we had quite an adventure going to another part of Zapopan to buy bus tickets. As students we can buy these tickets that make riding the bus 3 pesos instead of 6 pesos but it was SO freaking far away! We road the bus for quite awhile…which is a feat on it's own! The buses are like rides kind of. But cheaper I guess and more unpredictable ha ha. Then when we got there we walked around all these streets and we saw more the kind of Mexican streets that I had imagined we would see. We REALLY stuck out there. But we saw some really cool cathedrals and schools and stores! And it's way nice only paying half as much because we have to take the bus like 6 times a day.
Wednesday night we did something way fun! We went to the movies and saw Toy Story 3!! I guess Wednesday are like the sale day for movie tickets so it was cheaper. The movie was SOO freaking cute! It was in spanish, of course! And it was awesome because I understood pretty much all of it. I think cartoons are easier to follow than other movies and shows. I cried at the end…solo un pocito!
The best part about this movie theater was there AMAZING popcorn! Oh my it was SOO good! They carry like 4 types I think- Enchilada, acaramelado, light, and mantequilla. We had acaramelado and mantequilla. Oh it was heavenly! I also had some soda called Manzana Lift! Qué rico!
Dance lessons! June 22, 2010
Buenos Dias!!
Aye!! I had no idea how long it had been since I wrote! It's so weird because it feels almost like the days run all together…like time passes so fast but at the same time it feels like I have to have been here for way longer than a week!
Well, I have done lots this week since Tuesday afternoon. Tuesday night we went to the chapel for salsa dance lessons. Although, it wasn't as easy as I had thought it would be to get there because Michelle and I got mixed up as to where we were when we got off the bus. I guess we needed to take a second bus but we didn't know that so, when we got off we just started walking and it took us like 45 minutes to get there! Ha ha We stayed busy counting whistles, car honks, and the amount of cars that pulled over asking us if we wanted them to take us somewhere…I think we counted like 65 or 70 that day.
Qué divertido!! But once we got there it was SO fun! The members from the Single's Ward were the ones doing it and I learned quite a bit! It was fun to watch Gabriel (he was the teacher) because he is WAY good. I swear the Mexicans are born with dancing abilities or more what I mean is this little sass that you need to be a good salsa dancer ha because they just get their hips and shoulders going with the steps like there's a string attached or something!
When the class ended it was late and the buses had stopped so Pepe told me he would take Michelle and I home. I asked him if we could drop off another 2 girls on our way home and he said yes but it turned out to be quite an adventure! It took us over an hour to find their house!! Turns out they didn't really know exactly how to get home ha ha and poor Pepe was so gracious with us. After we finally found their house, he took Michelle and I home which took like 3 minutes! I tried to give him some money because I felt way bad that he drove around forever but he wouldn't take it. That's really characteristic of the people here, especially the members. I told him we would all have to buy him dinner or something. He just laughed. I think the members, well all people really, get a kick out of our Spanish…it's more like Spanglish ha ha.
El primer domingo-my first Sunday!
Hola!!
Bueno hoy fuimos a la iglesia. Church was to begin at 9 and usually we will ride the bus to church but for the first Sunday our mamas drove us all. Marcela drove us and also picked up two other girls in our group, they are living with her mom, because her mom is in charge of communion at their church. Es una familia muy muy amable! Me encantan!
It was an interesting day because when we arrived at church there was NO ONE there except for the guards. Oh bueno, the chapel is inside the same gate as the temple here! It's very cool! But anyways there was no one there -first time ever that I was the first one to church…probably the last time also- has and we just waited until the rest of our group arrived and we were confused why no one was there. Then some guy was at the building picking something up and he told us that today was stake conference (la conferencia de la estaca) and that everyone was at the stake center and the meeting was going to begin at 10. So, we had to wait forever for the last two girls to show up and then we took two buses and then walked a ways to get to the stake center. It was very interesting-a whole line of white kids, dressed in Sunday clothes, and try wearing heels on a bus that is more like a roller coaster!! Ha ha Anyways, we finally got to the stake center and the attendance was really pretty great! There were at least a few hundred people there I think.
At stake conference the speakers were great! The temple president and his wife spoke, the mission president and his wife spoke (I'm pretty sure that's who they were anyway lol), the stake president spoke and then also one of the bishops. The themes of the conference were really missionary work and the importance of temple marriages. It was interesting to see it was kind of different. The people her are just more family involved and orientated. One speaker had 2 ninas bear their testimonies…they were SOO sweet and cute. Another speaker had a joven bear his testimony when he was talking about mission work. Another speaker had a family come up who just had a baby they bore their testimonies on the importance of temple ordinances and being an eternal family. Then he had all these different families stand up to show all the familias eternas. It sounds weird but it was pretty neat. They have a way of being very sincere and direct about the gospel. It's good to realize that the principle of the gospel are the same everywhere but that there are some things that are okay to be different that demonstrate each culture doing their best to live the gospel.
On sundays we don't get food from our families porque la cocina is closed on sundays, as our mom said lol. So , after church nuestra maestra paid for us to go to a restaurant called pipiola- my teacher loves it.
There we had guacamole, and these chip type things and pico de gallo and all sorts of spice things, quesadillas, carne asada tacos-que rico! And beans. It was good!! Oh and horchata.
After that we walked to the bus stop near the school and Michelle and I road the bus home! The rest of the day we spent just kind of hanging out. I uploaded pictures, got a little organized, skyped with the family.
Then Michelle and I made our dinner- tuna sandwiches, tomato juice, ensalada, and banana. But then when the family came home from celebrating father's day she kept asking us if we wanted to eat cena with them so I said yes lol and we had quesadillas with this amazing salsa she made.
We have started eating a little more traditionally. Like today, it was our first day of school, we ate churizo de pavo con huevos for breakfast, then for lunch we had…well Michelle and I ate one lunch at school (burritos of pork and beans and horchata..SO. GOOD! and so cheap!) and then we came home after our classes and we had like this ground meat with potatoes and carrots in a spicy sauce and rice and beans and tortillas. It was delicious! For cena we had….aye I can't remember what it's called but it was like pan with beans and cheese that is toasted and then with salsa. That was SO good also! The salsa was muy pica tonight though! Oh they were called tortas ahogadas.
But today was a great but un poco long day! We went to school, had orientation, had our first classes, got our ID cards and student credentials, went to the mall to buy cell phones, took our first taxi here and apparently got a little bit ripped off because we are americanas, went home to eat, went to FHE and then home again and had cena. Busy day! At FHE some of the YSA came and tomorrow we are going to their salsa dance lessons en la noche at the chapel. Friday night they have a dance that we're going to go to! There were 3 girls and 4 boys that came from the ward to FHE. They were all very nice! Wednesday we are going to the movies…I think we're going to see Toy Story 3…with our group. Also, Michellita and I bought a secador (hairdryer) pero no sirve…it doesn't work..so tomorrow we have to go return in when we are at the galleria because it is next to Walmart.
Well I am very sleepy! So I have to go to sleep but everything is going well! I'm making new friends and learning lots. I love my spanish teacher…she is this cute little younger woman. Our classes are from 9-12 Monday through Friday. We finally got our iten. today so now I will know where we are going for our little weekend trips!
I was so tired getting up this morning because I didn't get to sleep until about 3 in the morning! I have hardly slept in weeks just with everything that has been going on! Getting engaged, wedding plans, Kamille and Logan both leaving, full time in school, going to Mexico, applying to the business school….everything has just been so busy! But they are all such wonderful things and I feel SO blessed to be experiencing SO much!
The plane rides were pretty diverse. The first plane ride was a pretty big plane and they gave us a lot of stuff it seemed like. I wasn't expecting it but they fed us breakfast (cereal and a banana), and then gave us drinks and then later came around with cups of water. The second ride was a LITTLE plane…I hate those! And we did get drinks but it was just a rough ride and it made me feel a little sick.
It was SO SO surreal getting off the plane in Guadalajara airport. Even laying here on my bed in my new Mexican family's house in Mexico, I still don't think it's hit me! I'm so excited to be here and to learn. I especially love that it's Corey's mission territory and I'm anxious to get at least just a taste of what he experienced here and developed a great love for. He is the best thing that has ever happened to me and I miss him like crazy! He wrote me the CUTEST note and hid it in my suit case for me..I will have to type it later. I can't wait to marry him on September 2nd! I love Corey!
But back to my SA, the family Michelle and I are living with is SO cute! They are the Leal family and they have two kids. The mom's name is Marcela and the dad's name is…I can't remember his name at the moment actually and the kids names are Daniella and Herardo (I will have to find out how to spell that). Daniella is 10 and she LOVES doing artwork and she also loves soccer. It's funny because in the family they all have different favorite teams! Tonight Daniella showed me her booklet of all the soccer teams and all her estampas. Daniella speaks some English and she speaks really fast in Spanish, actually both of the kids do. Marcela keeps telling them to talk more slowly so that we can understand them lol.
After we got off the plane we met up with our group and took a bus to the university where our mama's were waiting for us. The university seems way nice and way safe. We left with our mama in their mini van and Michelle and I were surprised when we pulled up to like a gated community where they live. It's way nice! They're kinda like townhouses really and they have three floors. The first floor is the living room area, family room area, kitchen table and the kitchen. The second level has two bedrooms-the bedroom we stay in and the parent's bedroom. I haven't been upstairs but there is another floor with rooms up there. They had a room all set up for us with two beds, a closet, and our own bathroom! They are so generous and kind. The dad works as an architect and he also has a company that "makes kitchens." They have a cleaning lady named Miriam who comes and stays the night every Wednesday and Friday. I'm not sure all that she does but I know she cleans the dishes and the house.
I have been surprised at how quickly I am feeling comfortable with the family and on trying really hard to communicate in Spanish. They are so helpful and patient and explain lots to us. I know if I study hard and practice all the time than I will really improve SO much in my Spanish!
We ate dinner tonight at like 8:45. We had toasted turkey sandwiches with tomato, lettuce, mayo, and I had jalepenos (thanks to my baby I like those! And they were way impressed I would eat them). I also tasted chipotle mayo on my sandwich. With it, we drank chocolate milk and had cookies after. It was fun to talk to them and learn about them and tell them about ourselves and constantly be absorbing new words. It's frustrating that I can't remember everything they teach me BUT I know in time it will come.
Tomorrow Marcela is making us breakfast in the morning…she is so funny. She was asking us what we like to eat and I told her I really like everything. I told her my favorite of the breakfast foods is eggs (mostly cause it's healthy and keeps me full) and she asked if we wanted anything else with the eggs. One option she said was churizo (?) and I was excited because I knew what that was and like it and she was excited about it too. And then I realized she is a woman after my own heart as she told me that it is made our of turkey, they stuff that she buys, because it's "mejor para el cuerpo (or she might have used figure or something)." I was like es perfecto! I was thinking about my wedding dress ha ha
Well I can't think of anything to write more right now because I'm so tired! One thing that is interesting is the new sounds and smells. I think you always expect new sights, but the sounds especially stick out to me- the music playing all the time, the loud TV programs, the different laughs, the kid's exclamations in spanish, it's awesome! Oh one more thing I thought of…the weirdest part today was probably how everyone stares at me; like at the airport people just stare at me lol probably cause I scream foreigner in appearance..it's just funny. I also notice that the young men especially stare a lot…I have to be careful!
Anyways…I will write more tomorrow.
Life is great! Sleep is very appealing right now! And I can't wait to be Mrs. Corey Carroll!
